Sanal Kumar Sasidharan, Secretary, Kazhcha Film Society

Kazhcha Indie Film Festival : Preface

Numerous promising young directors all over India are stepping forward to make movies that move away from the clutches of traditional commercial cinema, and come up with a refreshing take that convincingly dismantles the conventional view of what constitutes ‘art’ cinema, the stereotyped ones that go on to garner awards. This has in turn spurred World Cinema to sit up and take notice of the ripples caused by such independent movies that have gone on to garner several awards at various film festivals across the globe. Unfortunately back in their home they often faces complete neglect mainly since conventional film festivals are preoccupied with grandeur of a star studded ceremony.

On the other hand, due to the concerted efforts of the Kerala Chalachitra Akademi that organises the prestigious annual International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) along with the numerous film societies – both recognized and not-so-well-known -- that dot Kerala’s landscape, Malayalam independent cinema has carved out a niche for itself over the past few years.

Hence, It is a highly distressing fact for us that both Kerala Chalachitra Akademi and the IFFK which was instituted to promote such avant-garde movies from Kerala now seem to have moved away from its original aim. KIFF was, hence conceived as a corrective measure against such a ‘rejectionary’ attitude adopted by the Akademi and IFFK in promoting this parallel cinema movement

But with the course of time, KIFF evolved to be what it has to be for the indie cinema movement of India, a common platform for all independent movies and its makers to come together. KIFF should also be rightly viewed as a genuine protest against the prejudices that have crept in over the years in the selection process and the selection committee at all major film festivals in india.

CS Venkiteswaran

Re-asserting What is Ours

We are living in times when free speech and freedom of expression, which are the soul of democratic life and polity, are under severe threat. A strange and ominous power is unfolding in front of us: between the vested interests of the State, Market and now ever increasingly, Religious/Communal factions. Through their umpteen tentacles and agencies, ‘representatives’ and provocateurs , they stifle any form or act, gesture or intimation of dissent and difference. In the process, the civil society is denied the opportunity to be heard, and its voices are being hijacked by the diabolical polemics of power, in which the media too is contributing its mite. When all the arms of the State and forums of exchange are being thus controlled and surveilled, the citizen-artists or artist-citizens are forced to seek new ways of reaching out to the people, find alternative platforms of expression and exchange. With all the spaces of art – the theatres, film festivals, art events etc - and mediums of communication - press, radio, television, cinema etc - being colonizied by the State and Capital, artists have to network with people to talk to each other by exploring innovative sites for interaction, exhibition , reading, talking, performing, writing.

KIFF is a forum where artist/s talk down or preach to the viewers, but an open space for celebration of art, freedom of speech, right to dissent, aesthetic daring and experimentation. Here, the addressor and the addressee, artist and audience, are all one and the same..This is only a re-assertion of what is already ours, of what is enshrined in our Constitution, ideals and values our brightest minds lived and fought for.

Come, let us join hands to celebrate the spirit of democracy and freedom.

KIFF Signature Film

ElseVR

A miraculous experience of being ,inside the story,, a disruptive idea in narrative non fiction and journalism, India,s first and most important VR narrative platform - ElseVR comes to you this KIFF, for the first time in Kerala.

The ability and the desire to transmit knowhow, intention, and insight to others around us have co-evolved with humanity itself. Mixed reality is a huge milestone in that human project of record keeping, perspective sharing, and empathizing that began with the first cave painting, or even earlier. Mixed reality experiences (VR, AR, haptics) collapse the barrier of otherness between the viewer and the subject. After all, in a deeply interconnected world, there is no other.

The world is on the cusp of a revolution in extended realities. With Virtual Reality (VR), the viewer is totally transported to another place, time and reality, expanding the scope of human experience beyond localised perception

A Mixed Reality channel, ElseVR, shatters the barrier between the viewer and the subject, and kindles enquiry and empathy in us. Spearheaded by Anand Gandhi, the award winning filmmaker of the highly celebrated ,Ship of Thesus,, Memesys Cultural Lab will be conducting a session on the most radical change that is happening in the world of movies, The Virtual Reality. This session will cover the platform, the technology, challenges, content and what the future holds for VR projects.

Anand Gandhi ardently believes in the power of virtual reality to reshape cinema and is convinced that virtual and augmented reality are the future of storytelling. In 2014, he co founded Memesys Cultural Lab which has since been working relentlessly to make the experience as real as possible for the users. It has produced internationally well-received documentary ,An Insignificant Man, and launched ElseVR.

So, buckle up and get ready to be a part of Experimental Viewing

While residing in a shabby shack among migrant workers from other regions in India, Santosh doesn't act like a meek victim, with his circumstances instilling a cynical streak within his young mind. Through the eyes of this teenager the director, Miransha Naik, explores the exploitation and abuse of immigrants in a Goa and raises uncomfortable questions without offering convenient closure.
